Afraid of the tight swim trunks

It must have been the early 1980s when the swimshorts were introduced in the Netherlands. The short, loose-fitting trunks, often made of polyester and featuring a kind of inner brief. They came over from America and became a huge success.

Where men had previously all swum in tight-fitting swim briefs, they now switched en masse to loose, lightweight shorts. Why? Fashion. Loose-fitting clothing was already 'in' anyway. Sweaters were loose, trousers were loose, and now swimwear was too. Of course, swim briefs and swim boxers were still worn, but purely for practical reasons. For swimming laps in the pool. In 2015, swimshorts have become an essential part of men's wardrobes. They are often worn casually too, with flip-flops and a tank top. Nevertheless, tight-fitting swimwear is gaining popularity every year; many men are buying it again, as we have noticed at goedkopezwembroeken.nl. Wearing swim boxers in particular is fashionable.

There is, however, a group of men who categorically refuse to wear tight-fitting swim briefs (also disparagingly called 'ball crushers' by some). Why is that? Good question. Many men, wrongly, still think that wearing them is old-fashioned. They also seem to have a certain fear of putting on such a revealing, close-fitting garment. A pair of swimshorts feels much safer.

This fear is rather remarkable, especially when you look at the female population of the Netherlands. Women know nothing else but tight-fitting swimwear. Bikinis and swimsuits leave little room for anything loose, and the possibilities for 'hiding' are minimal. Women have no problem with that, and men consider it normal. But putting on a thin, stretchy pair of shorts themselves? They find that extremely difficult.

Strange, that contradiction. Still, 'fashion' will probably eventually overcome the fear. Tight-fitting swimwear is becoming more popular every year, after all, and if enough men wear a swim boxer or swim briefs , the 'scaredy-cats' will eventually switch too. Just think of beards. In the 1970s, almost every man wore one; then, for years, it was 'not done' and having a beard made you look extremely old-fashioned, and now it is suddenly incredibly fashionable again. So it will not be long before every man buys a pair of tight-fitting swim briefs. And the fear will be a thing of the past.
